John Denmark Unit

The John Denmark Unit (JDU) is an 18 bed inpatient service specialising in mental health and deafness. The information below has been deliberately written in a deaf accessible format.

What? Special NHS mental health services to adult deaf people. Has inpatient and community services. Has team of professionals with specialist skills. JDU offers range of services and treatments to adults.

Where?  Manchester. two other NHS places have inpatient services in Britain (Birmingham and London)

Who for?  Deaf adults use British Sign Language (BSL). Also can support other deaf, deafened and deaf/blind individuals get help to improve, help recover.

JDU important what?  Positive self-image, help see yourself in good way, improve feelings of self-worth (self-esteem). Feeling good about yourself helps people to stay well and to have good life in deaf community.

Referrals

John Denmark Unit is a national tertiary service. Means what? Have to have referral from secondary services ( e.g. local mental health services).

John Denmark do not accept GP referrals (primary care service).

JDU have specialist community team who use BSL. We offer a full assessment process, we can work with secondary mental health teams or help if you need to come and stay at JDU (inpatient).

Visitors and Visiting Times

Visitors   

Adults over 18 must go reception first.

Children under 18 years want visit? – Have to ask staff first. Check ok

Visiting when?

Visiting is between 18.00-20.00 (evenings ) on weekdays and 13.00-17.00 (afternoons) on weekends and bank holidays

NOTE – flexible visiting hours. JDU knows visitors may travel long way. Means visiting hours difficult. Need help with different visiting hours? Arrange visit with staff before. Staff will help.

DON’T turn up no appointment. Person maybe out, in treatment session or activity.
