CONNECT is a study using digital technology to see if it is possible to detect or predict if someone’s mental health might be getting worse.
Psychosis can involve a variety of symptoms, such as hearing voices, feeling suspicious around others or having confused thinking. This experience can sometimes become distressing and get in the way of living a fulfilling life. People who experience psychosis can experience changes in their activity levels, sleep, and routine just before they have their first episode of psychosis or experience a relapse.
The CONNECT team wants to see whether monitoring these kinds of indicators can detect and predict episodes or relapses and help mental health services provide support at the right time.
The CONNECT team is looking for 1,100 participants across the country to take part in the study. By wearing smart watches, using their smartphones and answering surveys on the CONNECT app, the team will carefully collect various data about the participants’ habits, such as going out, socialising, sleep, exercise and heartrate.

The CONNECT study will take place across six sites, in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sussex, Cardiff, London and Manchester. It is funded by the Wellcome Trust and hosted by the University of Manchester. The CONNECT team has also partnered with the McPin Foundation to ensure that public involvement and the perspectives of people living with psychosis are at the heart of the study.
