Non-pharmacological alternatives to pro re nata psychotropic medication

The findings of a survey by Jaclyn Pickup, a Senior Mental Health Practitioner at GMMH, have been published in the Nursing Times.
Findings of a survey led by GMMH's own Jaclyn Pickup, exploring non-pharmacological interventions as alternatives to pro re nata (as-required) psychotropic medication in mental health settings, have been published in the Nursing Times. The publication explores the results of the survey, which have been developed into a clinical aid suggesting possible interventions.
About the publication
PRN is medication, administered as needed, which can be given to service users who are experiencing a mental health crisis whilst in hospital.
Nurses were surveyed about non-pharmacological interventions for distressed patients. Findings were developed into a map grouping the interventions under the themes of physical health, psychological health, environment, distraction and relaxation.
These interventions align with existing research and clinical guidance that recommend a reduction in the use of pro re nata psychotropic medication.
