Overview
Combining stop smoking support with online mental health treatment via SilverCloud+.
Summary
What is the study about?
Smoking is the world’s leading cause of preventable illness and death. People with depression/anxiety are twice as likely to smoke compared to people without depression/anxiety. Quitting smoking can significantly not only improve your physical health, but also your mental health. Research shows that people with depression/anxiety are more likely to quit smoking if they get psychological support.
What are you trying to find out?
Research shows that people with depression/anxiety are more likely to quit smoking if they get psychological support. Therefore, this research aims to offer service users information about smoking and mental health, and help to quit smoking, alongside their psychological therapy in SilverCloud. We want to see if service users are interested in this support.
What does taking part involve?
If you decide you would like to take part, we will ask you to complete a consent form online. This study is a randomised controlled trial - that means SilverCloud users who would like to take part, will be randomly allocated to receive one of two treatments (i.e., have a 50/50 chance of receiving either treatment). You will either receive information about stopping smoking alongside your usual psychological therapy on SilverCloud, or receive information about stopping smoking at the end of your participation in the study.
During the study we will collect information about your wellbeing and smoking. Some of this information will be collected via an online survey. Some of this information we will collect from the service you are receiving your psychological therapy from (IAPT).
Three and six months after you start the study, one of our research team will contact you via email or telephone to ask you for follow-up information about your smoking status, mental health symptoms, and how you got on with the treatment. You will receive a £5 shopping voucher for completing each
follow-up. If you have quit smoking, we will ask you to provide a saliva sample via post to check your nicotine levels. You will receive a £10 voucher in the saliva testing kit that we post to you.
An optional part of the study will to be to take part in a one-to-one interview at the end of the study, so that we can learn about your experiences. You will receive a £15 voucher if you take part in a one-to-one interview. More information about interviews will be provided at the time.
Who is it for?
We are inviting people who are:
- using your local NHS psychological therapies service;
- 18 years of age or over;
- about to start online therapy using SilverCloud;
- regular tobacco smokers.
Why is it important?
Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your physical health and your overall wellbeing. By taking part you might increase your chances of quitting smoking. The information we get from this study will help us to inform a large clinical trial examining the effectiveness of offering stop smoking treatment in psychological therapy settings.
